Once you find your passion,

chase it.

Mind you, still do your very best in school,

but remember

that anyone can get straight A’s. 

Anyone can study all night and get 100% on a test the next day,

but nobody can paint a landscape like you can,

nobody can make the choreography you conjured, 

no one has your voice, 

I can think of no other person on earth who can act like you.

Just remember;

don’t leave your dreams on hold,

because you’ll be chasing that 4.0 GPA until the very last moment

where you’re forced to choose a career 

and you look back,

wondering that if you would’ve paid more attention

to what your heart was really in love with, 

you might’ve been the world’s next Picasso,

the next Mariel Martin, 

the next Beyonce, 

the next Johnny Depp….

I tell you

you are wrong in wondering that way.

You will not be the “next ______”,

you will be the first of your kind,

the only of your kind, 

 to breathe through your works,

to create something living, breathing, that will touch other’s hearts,

in your own special way.

So I beg you,

don’t forget where your heart truly belongs,

and if it belongs in getting Straight A’s and becoming a doctor, I know you will work hard and succeed, 

but if it belongs in the methods where society, titas, titos, friends, and life look down upon,

look straight up at them,

and delve into the passion that has engulfed your soul,

so that when you are on your deathbed, you will not look back on your life 

with regrets,

you will not let fear guide your life,

fear of an unstable job, 

fear of failure….

that the only fear in your life 

will be for God,

who put those passions in your heart for a reason,

who has all the money in the world to give you at the right time,

who will always catch you when you fall,

discipline you when you get off track,

and hear your cries and frustrations in the night.

….

Ultimately, my child, 

don’t let society steer you away from your love,

for I know

that you will master it beyond what you ever thought possible,

and your creation will shine.  

….
